Architect – Healthcare Design

Architecture – Birmingham, Alabama

Overview

Pen Pioneer is hiring on behalf of a forward-thinking design-build firm headquartered in Birmingham, AL. We are seeking a Healthcare Architect with a strong background in healthcare environments and a passion for merging traditional building logic with modular innovation. This role plays a vital part in the end-to-end design and delivery of high-performance healthcare spaces, from concept through occupancy.

The Architect will be embedded in a fully integrated delivery team—including manufacturing, engineering, and construction—working to streamline the healthcare development process and accelerate outcomes for medical clients.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the architectural design and technical detailing of healthcare facilities including clinics, free-standing ERs, and rehabilitation hospitals.
• Ensure compliance with local and national healthcare codes and guidelines (e.g., NFPA 101, FGI, AHCA, OSHPD, etc.).
• Collaborate daily with internal MEP engineers, construction managers, and modular partners to ensure designs are buildable, compliant, and efficient.
• Produce and manage high-quality construction documents in Revit, ensuring clarity, coordination, and constructability.
• Lead AHCA or equivalent state-level regulatory submissions, coordinating with internal teams and field personnel.
• Develop and implement repeatable design strategies that can be adapted across regions and systems.
• Mentor junior staff and contribute to the development of healthcare design standards and best practices across the organization.

Qualifications

• Licensed Architect with 5–10 years of professional experience, including direct experience in healthcare architecture.
• Deep knowledge of healthcare design regulations and compliance standards (FGI Guidelines, NFPA 101, AHCA/OSHPD or equivalents).
• Strong working knowledge of modular construction and prefabricated volumetric systems preferred.
• Advanced Revit proficiency with a proven track record of leading highly coordinated CD sets.
• Ability to manage multiple stakeholders and deliver in a fast-paced, integrated project delivery environment.
• Excellent communication and problem-solving skills; self-starter with a proactive mindset.

Reporting Structure

This role reports directly to the Chief Design Officer, with dotted-line accountability to Project Leads and the Director of Architecture. Daily collaboration will occur with project managers, field operations, and modular partners.

Compensation

$105,000 – $130,000 base salary , depending on experience and licensure, with bonus potential and full benefits.
